Kurland Village, South Africa
Supporting education, youth development and community outreach in Kurland Village, South Africa
Clinics + Community + Partnerships
This was a planned program in collaboration with another US NGO called “Sound of a Smile” working in Kurland Village SA.
Program background
Kurland Village is a small community of about 6,000 people just outside of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Kurland is home to primarily “Coloured” and Xhosa families, some families have been there for over 50 years while others may have arrived in the last couple months. Kurland is a place filled with life and resilience and passion. South Africa as a whole is still experiencing some of the lingering effects of Apartheid just as we have seen in America following the outlawing of slavery. The average daily pay in Kurland hovers around ZAR 225 or $12.50. When speaking to local government and to leaders in the community there is a clear desire to better Kurland and create a more sustainable economy with the township. The majority of homes are built from brick, concrete block or wood, ranging in size from 8’x8’ to 20’x20’. Small corner container stores with assortments of produce and goods scattered throughout.
This was a planned program in collaboration with another US NGO called “Sound of a Smile” working in Kurland Village SA. FLO Prepared a 1 weeks training plan specifically developed for youth & men soccer teams that open in the Kurland village.
This program is given to coaches and they can use it for their practices when we are gone. Additionally, FLO delivered 3 successes coaching clinics or sessions to 3 soccer teams up to 90 participants ages 15-30 years old. As well as one field day open to 70 plus youth in the village. During the clinics, we focused on games such as soccer, freebee, relay races, etc.
FLO team volunteered to support the SOAS NGO efforts in SA in 3 different areas:
1. Home improvement: our team helped repaint homes, clean walls, classrooms, fix brokens roofs, falling walls etc
2. Smile center: at this after school community center we helped students homework, provided meals, games, interactive activities etc
3. Food Security: The SOAS organization also provides community meals. During our time in SA we helped make meals for upwards of 30 families 3-4 times during the weeks.
